ENGLISH LANGUAGE CHALLENGES

 Hi all!

Learning a new language is always a challenge. In the case of English, personally, although I have been exposed to this language from an early age, having it as a branch since primary school, in music, in some family images, etc. And although I have demonstrated skills by studying other languages, such as French. English, on the other hand, has always been particularly difficult for me to learn.

One of the biggest difficulties when studying English is understanding it when other people speak it. Constantly in the different courses I have had in English, both at school and at university, one of the most common activities is listening to an audio that generally deals with some dialogue between a client and a salesperson, someone who interviews another person or a conversation between two friends. To then answer questions that evaluate how much we understood from that dialogue. That's when the problems start for me. Because when I listen to them it gives me the feeling of listening to a very long riddle that plays at full speed!

Another difficulty I have when studying English is speaking it. When I speak English in front of another person I get so nervous that I forget all the words and it becomes a really awkward moment. At least this is what happens to me in instances such as dissertations, which are also common in the English courses I have been to, where I have had to resort more to memory than to understanding the structure of sentences. Perhaps the key is always confidence, but when it comes to English, I still need to work on that aspect.

Thanks for reading me! have a great day!

CHANGES TO MY STUDY PROGRAMME

Hi all!

Something that really caught my attention when I entered university, and that personally meant a great disappointment, is that the educational system within it works in the same way as in school. Although the subjects change according to the career that each one chooses, the way of passing the contents within the classroom is exactly the same, the same happens with the way of evaluating, where the ability of each one to be able to memorize the greatest amount of information possible to later reproduce them in the exams. This means that each end of the semester the priority is to pass the branches at all costs and not learning or deep understanding of the contents.

On this, the first change I would make to my academic program would be to modify the dynamics within the chair, so that this is a space that allows the active participation of students and not that we are seen only as passive bodies that listen and absorb what that the teacher teaches.

Secondly, at least within my career (psychology), theory is above practice, which means a great obstacle later when it comes to going out to the labor field. For this reason, it would modify the way of evaluating the contents to turn it into a system that invites reflection and practical application to everyday situations and close to the students, that allow them to develop the skills and obtain the necessary tools that allow them to face the various situations that present themselves later as professionals, whatever the specialty they choose.

Lastly, I think it is important to include more female authors in the mandatory bibliography that is required of us in each field, so that they include a gender perspective (VERY NECESSARY, by the way)

It is time for a change in education, don't you think?

Have a great day!

PERSONAL OPINIONS

HI ALL!

Opinions are definitely something to be cautious about. Giving an opinion on certain topics or on someone can be really problematic if it is not expressed in an appropriate and respectful way. I think it is very important to take a few moments to reflect on what we are going to say, before communicating it to other people. Make sure we have enough arguments to defend our opinion and above all, have some handling of the issue on which we are going to comment.

When we interact with other people we must bear in mind that they may not agree with us, that they may have different experiences from ours, other ideologies and other subjectivities that will make them see things from other perspectives, which are just as valid. It is also hopeful that as a society we can be increasingly respectful of the opinions and feelings expressed by others, especially when they differ from our own.

Personally, it is important for me to continuously develop an increasingly active and tolerant listening, so that communication with the people around me is more effective. On the other hand, welcoming and respecting the opinions of others, as diverse as they may be, is essential for the practice of psychology in the professional field of the specialty it may be.
Finally, regarding the opinions that others make about me (as long as they are constructive) I try to be as receptive and understanding as possible, always considering that these can be a good feedback of what I give and I understand others in my relationships.

That's it! Thank you for reading!

THEMED POST 3: simple pleasures

In the current context of a pandemic, I have been inside my house for so long that I no longer even remember how long my quarantine has lasted. This condition, far from despair, has led me to pay more attention to the simple pleasures that I have at my fingertips, to the details of everyday life, to things that I really enjoy despite its simplicity and that before I had simply gone through tall. For example, for me, a simple pleasure in life is listening to the radio. I like it because I don't know what song will play next, they are all a mystery first and a surprise later.

I like it because they always play songs that I would never put on my own, because I have a very bad memory to remember the titles and because I have a habit (when I don't listen to the radio) of always putting the same songs by the same artists, and (almost always ) repeat them more than once, which I enjoy at first, but later (because of me) I am already bored.

I like it because I do not need an Internet connection to listen to it, it does not pause, I do not have to worry about changing songs manually, I like that from time to time the driver tells the time because it seems so useful when I am in the Street! But above all I like it because they always reproduce rock classics with the best sound quality, or at least I find that they sound much better than on other platforms.
Just like this, there are many other simple pleasures available at home that I have fortunately discovered during this time of confinement. I hope you have them too, so that this whole process is much more pleasant.

Have a great day!

POST GRADUATE STUDIES

Hi all!

It is very difficult for me to plan what I will do after graduating, because I study psychology and I have not yet decided which specialty of my career I will choose. However, currently the area that I enjoy studying the most is that of educational psychology, and being able to specialize in it later in my career is an idea that I really like. Although I am open to explore all the branches that psychology has, such as Legal Psychology and Community Psychology (both of which have also attracted my attention), I imagine myself practicing my profession in schools and I am excited to be able to do so. This is because the subject of education in Chile, its dynamics, training systems and schemes, inequality within the educational system and the logics that operate in it, have always interested me a lot. Furthermore, as a future psychologist, I aspire to be able to get involved with the communities in a closer and more integrated way
and not within the clinical framework.

Another idea that I have considered is to study something related to Differential Education in the future. I would really like as a future professional, to be able to acquire the pedagogical skills necessary to respond to the special educational needs of girls, boys and young people with communication and language disorders or different intellectual capacities, in order to help them achieve a full adult life and active. Referring again to the educational system, it is very important to pay attention to the diversity and different capacities of students, to reduce exclusion gaps in society, for example.

That's it! Thank you for reading!
